Christian Kjellvander rocks

Since I got really sick last friday, I missed Christian Kjellvander playing live at Debaser Medis. Luckily, the awesome Andreas Ivarsson were happy to write about the occation. Here it is!

The other night, Swedish singer-songwriter Christian Kjellvander played at Debaser Medis in Stockholm. He has been one of my favourite artists since 2001, and I was excited to see him perform - the first time I've seen him live in four years. The new album "The Rough and Rynge" got pretty good reviews when it came out in November, so my expectations were very high.

EP Trailer Park was Kjellvander's supporting act, and they play Band of Horses-ish music, and of course all  band members have beards! The band was good, and had a nice sound from the organ and violin.

After 30 minutes of beard-rock it was time for Christian Kjellvander and his band. My experience of Kjellvander live is that he's similar to his albums: soft singer-songwriter with a touch of country. This concert however was not like his albums; it was more rock than I ever would have expected from Kjellvander -  the crowd was even headbanging!

Kjellvander's music has evolved with his latest album, and so have his live performances. If you have the chance to go see him live, you should definitely do so!

It's good, it's bearded and it's belgian - Isbells

You probably remember José Gonzales version of Heartbeats for Sony Bravia's tv commercial with all the rubber balls bouncing down the streets of San Fransisco. Well, how could you possibly forget? Belgian band Isbells make the same kind of wonderful Lo-Fi-singer-songwriter pop songs that seems to be destined for tv commercials. Apparently Isbells is a hidden secret outside of Belgium, as not even Pitchfork seems to know anything about them. In short, chances are quite good that you will be the first in your gang to know, use it wisely.

Iron & Wine - Resurrection Fern

I love this song with Iron & Wine (Sam Beam), the lyrics is amazingly beautiful, see below.

In our days we will live
Like our ghosts will live
Pitching glass at the cornfield crows
And folding clothes

Like stubborn boys across the road
We'll keep everything
Grandma's gun, and the black bear claw
That took her dog

And when sister Laurie says "Amen,"
We won't hear anything
The ten-car train will take that word
That fledgling bird

And the falling house across the way
It'll keep everything
The baby's breath, our bravery wasted
And our shame

And we'll undress beside the ashes of the fire
Both our tender bellies wound in bailing wire
All the more a pair of underwater pearls
Than the oak tree and its Resurrection Fern

In our days we will say
What our ghosts will say
We gave the world what it saw fit
And what'd we get?

Like stubborn boys with big green eyes
We'll see everything
In the timid shade of the autumn leaves
And the buzzard's wing

And we'll undress beside the ashes of the fire
Our tender bellies all wound around in bailing wire
All the more a pair of underwater pearls
Than the oak tree and its Resurrection Fern

I'm Kingfisher

I went to see Ed Harcourt yesterday at Debaser (Stockholm, Sweden). Along on the scandinavian tour Ed brought Thomas Denver Jonsson aka I'm Kingfisher. He did a great performance and you should definetly hear him out!

This year, Thomas released his 4th album Arctic, though it's his first album under the name I'm Kingfisher, is a conceptual album about polar exhibitions and arctic flora and fauna. It's a really beautiful story, and album, and Thomas voice can melt ice (hehe).

Iron & Wine and his charming personality

Sam Beam aka Iron & Wine will be playing in Stockholm in february next year, february will be a great month with both Iron & Wine and Band of Horses.
I am really looking forward to seeing and hopefully meeting Sam Beam, from what I've seen (on YouTube) and read he seems to be a really really charming, funny and loveable person.

Not the best recording I've seen, but it's a great song and I think it shows a bit of Sam Beams personality.

And here, a live version of one of the songs from Iron & Wines new album, being released in the beginning of next year if i remember it right. Sound so beautiful.

A "brief" introduction to the music projects of Justin Vernon

Most of us know Justin DeYarmond Edison Vernon by the artist name Bon Iver. Not everyone have heard of all his other projects through the years. So I thought I'll give you a brief review.

Mount Vernon
When in college Justin started two bands, one of them - Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon did two releases: We can look up (1998) and All of us free (2000)

DeYarmond Edison
DeYarmond Edison was the other band that Justin started early on. The other members of DeYarmond Edison was Brand and Phil Cook and Joe Westerlund. After five years together the band split up and Justin left Raleigh and Wisconsin due to this and the break up with his girlfriend.
DeYarmond Edison released two albums by themselves, DeYarmond Edison (2004) and Silent Signs (2005). Also, there's an unreleased EP available on MySpace. When the band split up, the other members started the band Megafaun.

Justin Vernon
In 2006 Justin records the album Hazletons in his own name. Supposedly there is another recording too, but I've never heard it. Hazletons is beautiful though. Here, the title track.

Bon Iver
Love the story of how For Emma, Forever Ago (2008) came to life. After the break up between DeYarmond Edison, and another break up, with his girlfriend. Justin decided to leave town and went to his fathers cabin in north Wisconsin where he spent his days chopping wood, listenting to the howling wolves and writing and recordin For Emma Forever Ago. For me, this album is one of the best albums through all times. In 2009 they released the EP Blood Bank, and that was it for Bon Iver. Hoping for a comeback, forever and ever.

The Volcano Choir
The Volcano Choir is a post rock-indie band consisting of Justin Vernon and the members of Collections of Colonies of Bees. Their debut album Unmap, was released in September 2009.

Eau Claire Memorial Jazz I feat. Justin Vernon
The album A Decade With The Duke was released in 2009. A recorded live performance of the Eau Claire Memorial Jazz I and Justin Vernon.

GAYNGS
Gayngs is a soft rock band founded by Ryan Olson and the group consists of 23 musicians including Justin Vernons, Rhymesayers rapper P.O.S, and the members of Megafaun (who played in DeYarmond Edison). This year, they released the album Relayted.

Anais Mitchell feat. Justin Vernon
This year, Justin Vernon also contributed in 7 songs on Anais Mitchell's album Hadestown.

Kanye West feat. Justin Vernon
Ok, and then there is this highly anticipated collaboration with Kanye West and Justin Vernon. I don't think I will be anything but disappointed...

Surely there is projects and other things that I've missed, if you come to think of anything, please make a comment about it!

Though I don't know when I'll hit the bottom, I've been falling for so long that I can't tell. I know that you'll never hear me calling from the bottom of my sinful wishing well.

Awesome, ain't it? All my love to La Cienega for introducing me to Caitling Rose. Plain beautiful.

Epic fail by MTV Video Music Awards

Another Black Keys post. Recently, The Black Keys was awarded for their video "Tighten up" at MTV VMA, though - when they got their plaque....

The award winning video:

The Black Keys - iTunes Session

Teh awesomest blues-rock duo ever, The Black Keys, just released a iTunes Session. It's practically a full length album containing the following 10 songs:

01 Chop and Change
02 Everlasting Light
03 Howlin' for You
04 I'll Be Your Man
05 Next Girl
06 She's Long Gone
07 Sinister Kid
08 Tighten Up
09 Too Afraid to Love You
10 Your Touch

I rarely buy music theese days, but this one will definetly be worth the $9.99 - you don't get to hear a whole lot at http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/itunes-session/id396469740 but the short clips are enough for me to understand that I need this album.

Band of Horses covers Cee-Lo and the other way around

Ok, so I guess all of you've already heard Cee-Lo's (of Gnarls Barkley) cover of No ones gonna love you more than I do. Which I personally think is shit, but anyways, now Band of Horses decided it's payback time and recorded a cover of Cee-Lo's song Georgia. Both tracks will be released on a split 7' but is availiable digitally at www.bandofhorses.com now. Won't buy it myself though...

The Decemberists - true storytellers

Music is almost always a form of storytelling but, to me, The Decemberists takes it to another level. Their songs are often a history told chronologically, like childrens books for grown-ups accompanied by music.

My most recent obsession: El Madrigal

I've been wanting to tell you about my latest discovery for a couple of days now. The swedish rock trio El Madrigal. Seriously, you have to hear them out!
El Madrigal consists of Ola Karlsson, Tomas Sundin and Eric Lindström who has been playing together since May 2010. El Madrigal has this pure, stripped-down, bluesy rock sound that I constantly find myself searching for. The trio get their inspiration from bands like Neil Young & the Crazy Horse, Wilco and true blues heroes like Robert Johnson and Howling Wolf and being a trio was a very conscious choice:

"We like the air, the space and the dynamics that occurs, and is quite easy to obtain, when you're only three. We have all played in bands with a large number of members earlier, such as The Hi De Hos, and therefore, we wanted to explore a more stripped-down sound." (freely translated by yours truly)

For the moment Ola Karlsson is in Australia touring with his other band, The Gin Club (more about them in another blogpost in time) but the band promises that as soon as he comes home again, they will start playing live and finish the recordings of the upcoming EP. Until then:

Stockholm: Klubb Springfield and Ted Morris

This saturday (October 2'nd) Ted Morris plays live at Klubb Springfield, a club at Magnus Ladulås on Österlångatan 26 in Stockholm, Sweden. I will really try to get my act together, find a babysitter and go there. It's a shame that I haven't been there yet. Klubb Springfield is run by Marie Lindfors and Jimmy Robertson and besides having great live acts, such aas Ted Morris, they play americana, folkrock, singer/songwriter and alternative country.

Due Diligence

I got this mail today, from a man called Isaac Gillespie, and you know, I feel a bit flattered getting e-mail from the states about my blog. So, what did our dear Isaac have on his mind? Well, of course, promote his band! Which I just love. I really really wan't you to send me tips, your own band or others that you think I would like, and that my readers would like.

Isaac's band is called Due Diligence and from what my research tells me, he and his band has been working their asses of to bring in the money to make the album "I will wreck your life". Ok, so I've gone through the album a couple of times now and I really like the sound of Due Diligence musically, love love love the bluesy guitars, but sometimes Isaac's voice is kinda weak (but the awesome beard he's carrying makes me forgive him totally). There is this one song though, where Isaac's voice feels strong and well balanced, this became my instant favourite on the album - it's called Rain In The City (find it in the embedded music player below by pressing the little arrow besides "Crucifixion). Due Diligence, I wish you the best with the album release, stay in touch!

Let me go, let me go, let me go

"Let me go, let me go, let me go", the soloalbum from 2006 by Jason Molina (Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co.), is the obvious choice when I wan't to indulge in self-pity and despair. It's something with it that's so pure and filled with anxiety and devastation. The intimate setting and recording of the album is wonderful, sometimes you can hear the chair that Jason is sitting on squeak as he moves.

Don't know about this video, but it was the only one I could find. Very not official.

Band of Horses live at KCRW - No one's gonna love you more than I do

Ray LaMontagne & Levon Helm on tour

This autumn Ray LaMontagne and Levon Helm (The Band) goes on tour togheter. A match made in fucking heaven. Sadly, no gigs in Europe planned.

Ray LaMontagne, Elvis Costello, Levon Helm and others playing The Weight:

Two new movies signed R. Alverson, Jagjaguwar

Sometimes when I need input musically, I go to the record labels that I like, maybe they've singned a new artist or they've got someone in their stall that I've missed.
This morning i checked out JAGJAGUWAR which I love for artists like Bon Iver, Lightning Dust and Okkervil River just to metion a few. But this time, what I found was the director R. Alverson.
Alverson recently directed 2 movies under JAGJAGUWAR, The Builder, starring Colm O'Leary and New Jerusalem starring Colm O'Leary and Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy).

Synopsis: Following an Irish immigrant carpenter from coastal Queens to the Catskills and beyond, THE BUILDER is an american existential portrait that explores the gulf between the idea of a thing and the thing itself. Having set off to the New York countryside to construct a reproduction of the earliest of american cape houses, the protagonist (Colm O’Leary) finds himself overcome by an inexplicable fatigue. Debts and expectations mount alongside the crudest and most naive of deceptions, that of both self and of family. As the chasm grows the Builder finds himself confronted by the unnerving ambivalence of the world around him.

Synopsis: A meditation on friendship, human needs and frailty, New Jerusalem explores the allure and limitations of modern utopean belief. Sean (Colm O’leary), an irish immigrant to America, returning from a non-combat tour of duty in Afghanistan, finds his heart and mind in disarray. He befriends Ike (Will Oldham a.k.a Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy), a strong willed evangelical, who endeavord to ensure his salvation. Inundated by a relentless fragility, Sean is confronted by a choice between the temptation of certainty and tha chaos of the world around him.

This love is over

Ok, so today I got my act together and listened to Ray LaMontages new album Good Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise, which is accompanied by the Pariah Dogs.
It's a pretty decent album but im sorry to say that it won't turn into a favourite. Though, there are some really nice tracks on it. Right now, this is my favourite.

Phosphorescent @ Debaser Slussen

Last night Phosphorescent did an awesome gig at Debaser Slussen in Stockholm. I missed when he played in Gothenburg for like one or two years ago so I've really been waiting for him to come to Sweden again.
Anyways, I even had a chance to talk to Matthew after the show. As usual I made a fool out of myself. During our chat, the following conversation took place.

- So, how do you like Sweden so far? (Me)
- Well, it's good. We had to take all our clothes of to get through customs though... (Matthew)
- Good for you! One should take all the chances one gets to get naked.

Below a video I recorded with my cellphone, suprisingly good sound:

The times are a-changin'

Ok, so I'm switching to english. Why? Well, to be honest it all started yesterday when I went to see Phosphorescent at Debaser Slussen, wonderful show, but thats another blogpost. Anyhow, I talked to Matthew Houck afterwards and mentioned the blog and he kinda promised to read it. But the next morning when my blood alcohol level had lowered I realized that he probably wouldn't be able to read it, since it's in Swedish.
But you know, it would be so pussy-ish of me to change language just so that the man of my fucking dreams would be able to read it so I've been trying to find a couple of other reasons to write in english, none of them I can account for right now though.

Fuck it, english it is.

Ray LaMontagne

Ray LaMontagne har gått varm den senaste tiden hemma hos mig. Ironiskt nog var det Idol som påminde mig om honom, där Emil Karlsson sjöng fantastiska You are the best thing.

The Black Keys

When the night comes.
